Stand ‘n Seal Still Dangerous, Despite Recall

Filed October 31st, 2007 amy

Despite the 2005 recall of the spray-on sealant Stand ’n Seal, people continued to become seriously and fatally ill from this do-it-yourself product sold at Home Depot.  The latest report came from Dr. Friedel, a 63-year-old physician, who spent four days in intensive care with his lungs chemically inflamed.  At least 80 people have fallen ill due to this product.  Two have died.

Yet even with this well-documented threat, the manufacturer, Home Depot and the Consumer Product Safety Commission failed to get this product taken off the shelves.  After the initial recall, the manufacturer blamed consumers for not heeding the label’s warning of using the product in a well ventilated area.  Internal company documents prove the manufacturer knew that even with ventilation, Flexipel (the dangerous chemical) could cause a medical reaction.

Despite this knowledge, the original product remained on the shelves for over a year after the 2005 recall.  When the product was finally replaced, it still contained the same dangerous chemical along with an added odor to cover it up.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission received many notices after the recall that Stand ’n Seal was still a hazard.  Many who complained state they never received a response.  The product was finally pulled from store shelves this spring, but it may still linger on the shelves of home owners and do-it-yourselfers who purchased the product before or after the recall and aren’t aware that the product is potentially deadly.
