Health officials in Florida say there has been a spike in the cancer rates among residents of a rural village near West Palm.

However, a report on the initial phases of an investigation into a potential cancer cluster among the residents did not draw any conclusions between environmental conditions and the increased rate of cancers and brain tumors.

According to a report from Palm Beach Post, the number of cancer cases among residents from 1995 until 2007 was about 300 higher than average in the state.

Residents hoping a link between contaminated water and the cases of cancer and brain tumors would be established by the report. However, the report showed that drinking water was safe, but raw water samples showed elevated levels of radium.

The Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection said it will continue to investigate the potentially contaminated ground water during the next phase of the investigation into the cancer cluster.
