Thirty People Hurt in Charter Bus Crash on Interstate 95 in Connecticut

Filed February 9th, 2016 F.A. Kelley

At least 30 people were hurt when a bus headed to the Mohegan Sun casino rolled over on Interstate 95 in Connecticut during Monday afternoon’s snowstorm.

The state’s Department of Transportation said the accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. The bus, owned by Dahlia Inc., and operated by VMC East Coast, left from New York City on its way to the casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, FoxNews reports.

Dr. Andy Ulrich of Yale-New Haven Hospital told FoxNews that six incoming patients were in critical condition. A reporter for TV station FOX61 said at least four people were removed from the bus on stretchers. Hospital spokesman Mark D’Antonio said the hospital received eight patients, which was fewer that the than the 30 they originally expected. One person suffered several broken bones and the others had cuts and bruises. Shoreline Medical Center received 16 patients.

According to state trooper Kelly Grant, as many as 70 people were on the bus. Rescue crews took the passengers who were not hurt to a nearby gym.

In a statement, VMC East Coast said it was saddened “that this has happened today” and thanked firefighters, paramedics and police.

Monday’s crash happened 13 years to the day after a Dahlia bus bound for Atlantic City crashed on New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway. That crash killed two people and injured dozens more.

Television images from the crash showed the bus on its side off the right shoulder of the highway. The northbound side of I-95 was closed between exits 61 and 62. The accident occurred during a snowstorm that was expected to drop up to a foot of snow on parts of Connecticut, but it was not immediately clear if the stormy weather was a factor in the crash.
