Twelve-Year-Old Girl Loses Her Life Crossing the Street in Elmont

Filed February 2nd, 2016 M. Lepmanis

A seventh-grade girl was hit by a car just after 7:30 AM on Monday, February 1, 2015 in front of Martin DePorres School in Elmont, Queens, in New York.

She was taken to Franklin General Hospital where she died one hour later, according to ABC News. The girl was with her twin sister and a friend. According to police, they were jaywalking, and did not have a green light when they were crossing the street on their way to Elmont Jr. High School.

The driver of the car was a 38-year-old man from Far Rockaway, who stayed at the scene, according to police, and attempted to help the girl. The police are investigating if speed was a factor in the accident. The accident happened in a 30-mile-per-hour zone. From the appearance of the car, the impact that threw the victim about 100 feet, gave reason to question how fast the car was going at the time of the fatal accident.

A witness who was standing nearby at the time of the accident saw the girl fly over the hood of the car and heard and saw the driver’s “screeching on his breaks for about 20 feet.” Elmont Jr. High is about a block from the scene and students told Eyewitness News that that particular crossing was often used as a shortcut. There was no crossing guard there, but that afternoon, Nassau police were there to monitor the students at the time of dismissal.

The school superintendent issued a statement that grief counselors would be made available to students and staff and condolences were extended to the family and friends of the girl.
