Drunken Driver Kills Woman Stranded on BQE

Filed August 31st, 2016 Lillian

Drunken-Driver-BQE

A mother was killed by a drunken driver who struck her while she was stranded on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The driver caused a chain reaction that sent her flying over the guardrail, according to authorities and family members. The victim was driving home from a family wedding with two of her young children in her nephew’s 1997 Toyota Rav4. Her sister-in-law, driving a 2005 Chevy, got a flat tire.

New York Post reports that the victim’s car pulled over onto the shoulder of the BQE near Meeker Avenue, stopping near her sister-in-law’s car. The woman was standing on the highway when a 43-year-old man driving a 2011 BMW collided with the back of the Chevy. The force of the crash caused a chain reaction, and sent the woman flying over the guardrail and onto Meeker Avenue below. The horrific accident occurred before eight of the woman’s family members.

The woman was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital. The mother of four from Guinea was a stay-at-home mom who used to work with special-needs children.

Her husband of 27 years told New York Post, “My wife left me to go to a wedding, and she didn’t come back. She died. Somebody drove into them,”.

Family members say the BMW driver was speeding, estimating that he was going at least 100 mph. The victim’s nephew, 33, said the BMW driver was intoxicated and tried to flee the scene on foot. He was held by her family members until the police arrived. “He smelled of liquor all over,” the victim’s nephew said, according to New York Post. “He said he wasn’t driving, but he was the only person in the car.”

New York Post interviewed a woman who lives on Meeker Avenue near where the victim fell. “I heard someone screaming at the top of their lungs, and I looked outside my window, and I saw her body lying on the street.” she said.

“She had a head injury, definitely — lots of blood by her head,” said the woman. “It was horrible. It was upsetting.”

A retired police officer also heard the fatal accident as it occurred. “When I opened up the window, I heard a woman screaming her bloody mind out,” he told New York Post. “I saw [people] all looking down from the highway, and there was a woman over there…She was sprawled out. There was just blood running down the street.” He says he remembers someone shouting, “That’s my mother!”
