Victim of Fatal Long Island Crash Identified

Filed September 7th, 2016 F.A. Kelley

Southold, New York, police have identified the man who was killed in a crash on Main Bayview Road in Southold on Saturday, September 3.

Thirty-one-year-old Colin Ryan from Massapequa, New York, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, the Suffolk Times reports. The driver of the other vehicle was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries, police say.

Ryan was driving a Honda coupe north on Main Bayview near the intersection with Williamsburg Drive. He left his lane and struck a southbound SUV driven by the woman, according to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley. The damage to the vehicles was extensive and it took the fire department “about an hour and a half” to free the woman from her vehicle, Chief Flatley said. There were no passengers in either vehicle, according to the Suffolk Times.

The police investigation continues and Flatley said police were interviewing a witness.

A former Hicksville volunteer firefighter and a retired Navy nurse and former EMT ran to the scene from nearby homes to offer assistance.

“I heard the bang and said ‘That’s not good,’” Greg Markotsis said. “I’ve seen a lot of accidents in my day, but this was pretty hairy.” The injured woman was alert and talking when the nurse, Dianne Wamsley, reached her car. The woman said the other car “just swerved into me” and it looked like the driver had lost control of his car.

Dianne Wamsley said there have been several accidents on Main Bayview Road in the past year. Wamsley thinks the 35 mph speed limit should be lower. “People think that road is straight but it does have a little edge to it,” she said. “If you’re going 55 to 60, that little edge is very unforgiving.”

Main Bayview Road remained closed for several hours after the accident, reopening shortly after 3:30 p.m., the Suffolk Times reported.
